Teens

Your teen is facing different challenges than you did.

Managing many demands.

In a complex world.

With an incomplete skill set.

Executive Function Coaching for Teens can

  • Take the Pressure off of Your Relationship

  • Reduce School Stress

  • Build Skills Lost During COVID

  • Increase Personal Motivation

  • Build Confidence Through Understanding and Embracing a Diagnosis like ADHD

But what do you actually do?

I am responsive to an individual student’s needs, so I don’t apply a cookie-cutter plan. I will help your student understand how their OWN brain takes in & processes information, so they can play to their strengths.

We will talk about everything from calendars to exactly how to study, to sleep/exercise/hydration, to stress management, to improving concentration & confidence.

Tackling big projects or preparing for big tests together is frequently a tack that I take. Whatever is challenging your student in the moment can be a vehicle to teach EF skills, so we end up working together on whatever pops up. This can go beyond academics - from the college process to a cheer routine, to a disastrously messy room!

I am very familiar with Charlotte area high school programs, including IB.

I help with schedule planning and navigating administration to get needs met.

So How Will it Work?

Typical sessions are 45 minutes, in person, once a week. We may decide to meet more frequently in the beginning. We may eventually back down to 30 minute check-ins, which can happen over Zoom. I will likely text with your student during the week. Your student can expect a safe, supportive space & confidentiality with me. I will update parents by text or phone as needed, depending on your preference. But my goal is that your student take on the responsibility and motivation for their own learning!

Talking to Your Teen About Executive Function Coaching

First and foremost, EF Coaching is NOT a punishment, NOT a consequence. It is an OPPORTUNITY.

I get it. Up front it usually sounds like a DRAG to see an EF coach…but I find teens are very relieved when they see that my intention is to take pressure OFF of them (and off of your parent/child relationship as well). Most students are very excited by the end of our first meeting! I will NOT create MORE work for your student. My job is to make their (and your) life EASIER.

Similar to a baseball player who gets help from a private batting coach,

some students need help to develop the skills it takes to succeed in school.

EF skills like organization & time management don't come naturally like breathing, but we're all expected to do it!

If you have gotten this far, your student is probably thirsty for help but doesn't know how to ask for it.

They may be shutting down.

COVID left a LOT of students struggling.

It is developmentally appropriate that they can't hear these things from their parent.

Executive Function Coaching

may be the help you didn't know you needed.
